General Questions

What are the admission requirements for transfer students?
Truman accepts a limited number of students who have earned previous college credit from other accredited institutions. Admission is based upon cumulative academic record.

How many transfer students currently attend Truman? 
Approximately 150 transfer students are enrolled at Truman for the 2009 fall semester, and 65% of transfer students who applied were accepted.

Applying Questions

How do I apply for admission? 
Applying for admission is easy with Truman’s online application.  You can save your work online anytime so you don’t have to fill out the entire application all at one time!

If you don't want to apply online, you can still print the Transfer Application for Admission (pdf) from our website and send it in. Make sure you have your college transcripts and your high school transcript and ACT/SAT score(s) (if required) sent to the Office of Admission. 

What determines whether I am a transfer student or a reapplicant?
A transfer student is anyone who is not currently enrolled at Truman and who has completed 12 or more hours of post high school college credit.  A reapplicant is anyone who has previously attended Truman, withdrawn, and is now reapplying for admission.  If at any point between withdrawing from Truman and reapplying, you have enrolled in and taken courses from another institution, then you are a transfer student

I have previously attended Truman.  Do I need to complete the entire application process again?
If you have previously attended Truman, you should complete questions 1 through 30b of the paper Application for Admission or through the Enrollment Information Part 2 section of the online application and send us official transcripts from any institution you have attended other than Truman.  (Your essay, high school transcripts, and Truman transcripts will be pulled from your previous file and placed with your current application.)

Housing Questions

When I transfer to Truman, what are my housing options? 
Freshman transfer students are required to live in one of our on-campus residence life facilities. Other transfer students may live on- or off-campus. Once you are accepted, you will receive your housing application in the mail. You may request to live with another transfer student. Your requests will be accommodated upon availability. The sooner you apply, the better your chances are of receiving your first choice in housing.  Visit our Residence Life website to find out more about on-campus living.

Transferring Credit Questions

Who determines what credits will transfer?
The Registrar is responsible for making all final determinations on transfer credits. 

What credits will transfer/how do I find out what credits will transfer?
Transfer equivalency guides for a number of institutions are available online.  The Registrar's Transfer Website also provides a listing of courses, by institution, that have previously been transferred to Truman State University.

If your school or course is not listed, the most efficient way to find out what credits will transfer is to have a copy of your college transcripts sent to Truman’s admission office with a request that those transcripts be evaluated for a specific major.  The Registrar will then examine the classes and compare those to Truman classes for similarities and differences.  Classes that are similar in subject and difficulty to Truman classes will be accepted as credits for specific classes.  Classes that do not have a comparable Truman class may still be accepted as elective credits, depending on determination by the Registrar. 

What about classes I am currently taking that won’t be included on the transcript?
Request that a copy of your final transcripts be sent to Truman at the completion of the semester.  The Registrar will then update your credit evaluation to include the latest information. In the meantime, you may also submit an unofficial copy of your transcript to transfer@truman.edu for preliminary evaluation.

Do I have to report all of my previous college coursework?
Yes, students who have enrolled at any other institution must have official transcripts sent from that institution directly to the Truman State University Registrar's Office upon completion of the course(s). Intentional nondisclosure of transfer credit by any student immediately after completion of a course(s) may result in dismissal from Truman State University.

How many credits may I transfer to Truman?
Students may transfer any number of credits.  However, any student wishing to earn a baccalaureate degree from Truman must earn a minimum of 45 hours of Truman coursework credit, with the last 28 hours taken at Truman.  Of those 45 hours a minimum of 15 hours must be major coursework.

How will my AP credits transfer?
AP credits transfer according to Truman standards, not the standards of the transferring school.  This means that credits earned through AP scores at a previous school will not automatically be accepted at Truman. You can access Truman's equivalency guide on the Registrar's AP website. AP scores of 3 or above will be considered for Truman credit, and credit will be given for the appropriate Truman class. You will need to request that your official AP scores be sent to Truman. Instructions on how to do this are available on the College Board's website.

How will my GPA be calculated?
Transfer grades are calculated by using the grades for all courses accepted in transfer (this includes D’s and F’s earned in courses normally accepted for credit at Truman).

Scholarship Questions

Are transfer students eligible for scholarships? 
Truman offers both automatic and competitive Transfer Student Scholarships. These merit-based scholarships are renewable.

I applied to Truman as a freshman and was offered a scholarship.  I decided to attend school at a different university, but am again interested in attending Truman.  Is it possible for me to receive the scholarship I had previously been offered?
Any scholarships you were previously offered were automatically forfeited when you declined attending Truman during the semester for which you applied.  However, Truman offers several scholarships exclusively for transfer students.  The Application for Admission serves as the application for these awards.

I was awarded a scholarship during my previous attendance at Truman.  Can I still receive that same scholarship?
In general, a reapplicant that leaves Truman meeting the criteria to renew his or her Truman scholarship will receive the same scholarship upon re-admission.  If the student enrolled at any other college or university after leaving Truman, he or she will be considered for admission as a transfer student.  If admitted, the student will be considered for Truman’s transfer student scholarship program.
